A wedding day…”it’s supposed to be the happiest day of my life….”
Sylvia and Marek are getting married, and the family are all invited.
Set in a former mining town in the North of England, the heat of a hot summer’s day and the alcohol fuelled celebrations threaten to rock the newly married couple and the relationships within the rest of the family.
Regrets, drunken flirting and strained family grudges all bubble up. Passions boil over and the limits of love are tested.
This is a passionate, heartbreaking and hilarious portrayal of a larger-than-life family struggling to come to terms with a changing world.
The play opened to five-star, rave reviews in London’s National Theatre in 2024
“Deliriously funny”
“Uproariously enthralling”
“Fizzes with sharp comic observation”
“Beautifully observed and bruisingly hilarious”
Beth Steel’s Olivier-nominated, uproariously funny family drama Till the Stars Come Down was nominated for 2 Olivier Awards and transferred from the National to the West End in 2025.

Director
Firstly, this play is funny. Funny because life is hard and heartbreaking.
The play puts the women in this family front and centre. It is the mothers and sisters, aunts and daughters who joyously keep the family together, even when long held, political grudges and resentments threaten to pull them all apart.
It’s about the messiness of life, and no matter how ordered and organised we try to make it – ungovernable feelings, relationships and love can shift the tectonic family plates in the blink of an eye.
The characters are strong though – brave mothers, mad aunts, naughty sisters, confused teenagers, lost fathers, angry brothers, regretful husbands. All good, hard working people, all trying to make the best of their lives.
Through these bold characters, the play explores love, uncertainty and the knowledge that any decision to alter the families status-quo has profound impacts on everyone around them.
All the family members are searching for what we need in life, to keep going - a strong spirit, some resilience and bounce-back despite job losses, love losses and crumbling relationships, in a rapidly shifting and changing modern world.
It’s a joy to be working on this play with the super talented 3rd Year Acting Students at IAB.
