Our Foundation in Musical Theatre course is designed to give you intensive training over two terms to develop your singing, dancing and acting, preparing you to access a BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre at IAB or elsewhere.

You will study Singing, Acting Through Song, Jazz, Tap, Ballet and Commercial Dance, supported by one-to-one singing lessons, to develop you as a versatile and confident triple-threat performer.

Strengthen the foundation of Musical Theatre

Musical theatre is about more than singing, dancing and acting. It’s about bringing all three together to tell a story and connect with an audience. At IAB, students build the skills and confidence they need to become expressive, versatile and confident triple-threat performers.

Training is grounded in Singing, through Musicianship, Technique and weekly one-to-one singing lessons, alongside Acting and Acting Through Song.

Dance training spans Jazz, Tap, Ballet and Commercial Dance, supported by Body Conditioning. Students also prepare for their next step through Audition & Application classes, and perform in both an ensemble piece and a live solo showcase.

Please note

This is not a beginner course. Previous Musical Theatre training is required to join the programme, which will be assessed during the audition process.

The Foundation Musical Theatre course is divided into 7 different modules.

Singing

Technique

One-to-one Lessons

The heart of the course. Build healthy vocal technique and musicianship, and develop your own voice with weekly one-to-one singing lessons, performing solo and group songs with accuracy, harmony and style.

Acting

Acting

Acting Through Song

Develop characterisation of mind, voice and body through contrasting monologues, and learn to bring a song to life with Acting Through Song, combining acting and singing in musical theatre repertoire.

Jazz

2 Terms

Jazz

Commecial Dance

Train in the core dance style of musical theatre, building the technique, movement vocabulary and performance energy needed for stage.

 

Tap

2 Terms

Tap

Develop rhythm, precision and musicality through regular Tap classes, an essential skill for every musical theatre performer.

Ballet

2 Term

Ballet

Body Conditioning

Build a strong technical foundation through Ballet, developing the alignment, control and strength that support all your dance work.

 

Audition & Application

Audition Preparation

Prepare your audition material and applications for degree-level musical theatre training, learning to present yourself with confidence.

Performance

Last Term

Ensemble

Solo Showcase

Work as part of a company to rehearse and perform an ensemble piece, and present your own solo in a live showcase.

2. Attend the audition

What does the audition consist of?

STAGE 1: Video submission

You will be asked to submit a video of a:

  • Contemporary musical theatre song
  • Classical musical theatre song
  • Jazz dance video
  • Contemporary acting monologue

STAGE 2: Live audition

If you pass the first stage, you will be invited to take part in a live audition where you will be asked to attend a:

  • Ballet class
  • Jazz class
  • Individual presentation of songs and monologue plus interview

What will I be asked to submit?

You will be asked to submit a video of a:

  • Contemporary musical theatre song
  • Classical musical theatre song
  • Contemporary acting monologue
  • Two ballet exercises performed on both sides
  • Jazz set choreography

Important note: Once you’ve submitted the application, we will send you more details on the process and links to the set choreography you will need to learn.

3. Wait for the result

The audition results can take up to 4 weeks to process.

Entry criteria

Successful audition, IELTS 5.5 or equivalent, and have studied at least one year of the national university entry academic qualification or equivalent of your country.

Graduation

A graduation will be arranged by the IAB for all graduating students. Further information is provided directly to graduating students.

Award Certificate

Foundation Musical Theatre

Upon successful completion, students receive an IAB Foundation Musical Theatre Award Certificate.
