How the IAB is governed
The Institute of the Arts Barcelona is committed to effective governance, academic excellence and transparent decision-making. Our governance framework provides clear oversight of the Institute’s strategic direction, academic quality and operational performance through a series of boards, committees and leadership groups that work together to support our students, staff and wider community.
Strategic Board
The Strategic Board provides the overall strategic direction and oversight of the Institute of the Arts Barcelona (IAB).
Comprising the Institute’s shareholders, the Board is responsible for setting the long-term vision, approving major strategic decisions and ensuring the continued sustainability and success of the Institute. Working closely with the Executive Chair and Principal, the Strategic Board supports the development of IAB as an internationally recognised specialist higher education institution for the performing arts.
Senior Leadership Team
The Senior Leadership Team brings together the Institute’s Academic Board and Operations Board to support the effective management of the Institute.
Chaired by the Principal, the Team provides a forum for strategic planning, organisational leadership and cross-departmental collaboration. It ensures that academic priorities, operational services and institutional objectives are aligned, enabling the Institute to deliver an outstanding educational experience and achieve its strategic ambitions.
Academic Board
The Academic Board is the Institute’s senior academic committee and is responsible for safeguarding the quality and standards of the Institute’s higher education provision.
The Board provides leadership across learning and teaching, curriculum development, assessment, academic quality and enhancement. Working closely with academic staff and professional services, it supports continuous improvement, academic innovation and an outstanding student experience while ensuring compliance with the requirements of the Institute’s validating university.
Operations Board
The Operations Board provides executive oversight of the Institute’s professional services and operational activities.
Reporting to the Principal, the Board oversees finance, corporate services, operations, facilities, information technology, compliance and institutional performance. Through collaborative leadership, it ensures that the services supporting students, staff and academic delivery are efficient, effective and aligned with the Institute’s strategic priorities.
Teaching and Learning Committee
The Teaching and Learning Committee oversees the enhancement of learning, teaching and assessment across the Institute.
The Committee promotes excellence in pedagogic practice, monitors the quality of the student learning experience and supports curriculum innovation and enhancement across all programmes.
Equality, Diversity, Inclusivity Committee
The Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Committee champions an inclusive, equitable and supportive environment for all members of the Institute community.
The Committee oversees the development of institutional policies and initiatives relating to equality, diversity and inclusion, promoting good practice and ensuring that the Institute meets its legal and ethical responsibilities.
Production Committee
The Production Committee provides strategic oversight of the Institute’s public performance programme.
Working collaboratively across academic and professional services, the Committee oversees production planning, resource allocation, scheduling and the delivery of performance opportunities that support the curriculum and enhance the student experience.
Research and Innovation Board
The Research and Innovation Board provides strategic leadership for research, scholarly activity, innovation and knowledge exchange across the Institute.
The Board oversees the development and implementation of the Institute’s research strategy, promotes excellence in research and creative practice, supports staff and student scholarship, fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, and encourages partnerships with external organisations. It also leads the Institute’s approach to research grants, external funding opportunities and knowledge exchange, ensuring that research activity enhances teaching, informs professional practice and strengthens the Institute’s national and international reputation.
