About Anatomy of a Suicide

I have Stayed. I have Stayed – I have Stayed for as long as I possibly can.

Three generations of women. For each, the chaos of what has come before brings with it a painful legacy.

Alice Birch's Susan Smith Blackburn Prizewinning play is a powerful exploration of inter-generational trauma, told across three interlinking narratives.

Alice Birch

Playwright

Born in Malvern in 1986, Alice Birch is one of the most daring and innovative voices in contemporary British playwriting. She studied English at the University of Exeter before honing her craft through the Royal Court’s Young Writers’ Programme. Her work is celebrated for its unique formal experimentation and profound exploration of female psychology. She has received numerous accolades, including the George Devine Award for Revolt. She Said. Revolt Again. and the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for Anatomy of a Suicide. In film and television, Birch wrote the acclaimed screenplay for Lady Macbeth (2016) and has been a key creative voice behind hits such as Succession (HBO), Normal People (Hulu/BBC), and Dead Ringers (Amazon Prime). Her writing continues to challenge narrative conventions with both raw intensity and lyrical precision.
