About Love Wants a Holiday

“Love Wants a Holiday, The Music of Maury Yeston” is an original revue of the composer’s work created just for the IAB.

We’ll find out that “LOVE” is tired of being the force that makes the world go round, as he describes himself, and that he desperately wants a holiday.

“DEATH”, on the other hand, will appear to claim that he is the one that plays the most fundamental role in shaping human lives.

During the concert, LOVE and DEATH will present arguments that support their opposing points of view, and of course, many of them will come in the form of a Maury Yeston song. We will witness a selection of songs which have never been heard before as a whole, while privately reflecting on the meaning of life as we know it.

Director's note

Creating "Love Wants a Holiday" with this talented young cast has been an extraordinary journey. Because it was a brand-new show, we had to make an extra effort to trust the process, to remain flexible, and to embrace the uncertainties. I want to acknowledge the dedication and the resilience of everyone involved—cast, creative team, and crew—to bring this vision to life under such unique circumstances.

To the MT5 class: Thank you for facing this challenge WITH ME. Those written lines were formless until you made them your own. And the already marvelous score shone with a bright new light as it inhabited your voices."

This production also holds special significance as a celebration of Maury Yeston’s 80th birthday. For me, the coincidence of our dress rehearsal falling on that exact date is… Well, not a mere coincidence. I met Maury not so long ago. He encouraged me to pursue my dreams, even when I felt lost and uncertain about the future. It was during those long conversations that something remarkable happened: something sparked.

I was so moved by his work, that I felt an urgent need to share it. As I once told him, “I am a happier person because of your music, it’s as simple as that”. That desire—this profound wish to spread the love—became the seed of this project.

It is my HOPE, as LOVE so eloquently puts it, that this class recalls this experience not just as a hurdle to overcome, but as a distinctive opportunity to flourish—to take part in shaping something raw, authentic, and full of potential. Each of you have inspired me through your passion and your openness, and I hope you will take these experiences with you as you continue your artistic journeys. Love Wants a Holiday is, in many ways, a tribute to Maury Yeston’s legacy, but also to music itself, a force that transcends all borders while conjuring magic.

“You know everything about me”, he tells me. “I’m an open book. Listen to my music – it's all there.' Thank you, Maury, thank you, music, and thank you all for being here. And to you, Nick, and to everyone at the IAB, from the bottom of my heart: thank you for opening your doors to me yet again, and for embracing this idea with such enthusiasm.
