Girls Like That by Canadian playwright Evan Placey was commissioned by Birmingham Repertory theatre to be first performed by their Young REP in 2013. This version has been edited and adapted to meet the requirements and interests of this year's IAB Foundation in Acting. It was written as an ensemble piece for young adults with no designated parts. The central story follows a group of girls through their development during their school and teenage years. In particular it, focuses on their relationships and attitudes towards one girl, Scarlett, who has always been seen as, a bit different or something of an outsider in their class. When an 'initimate' photograph of Scarlett is circulated on their social media during school, the deeper concerns, fears, and prejudices of the peer group are triggered. The tensions of dealing with the public and private, inappropriateness and discretion and the dynamics of their friendships and 'sisterhood' - are all exposed as the story unfolds.

Content Warnings & Caution
While the play is careful to avoid the use of overly explicit or prurient use of imagery and language it does reflect the frank concerns of teenagers coming to terms with their sexuality and relationships. As such there may be words, phrases and depictions of teenage behaviour that some may find offensive. It is worth noting however, that this text is now used in UK schools at examination level as a study text to help young people discuss and confront these themes. Recommended for High School student aged viewers and above.

Director
I have been lucky enough to be involved with the IAB since its inception. In my former consultative role as Link Tutor for the school's awarding body, Liverpool John Moores University, it has been an immense pleasure to see and play some part in its growth and strength. On leaving the university last summer, it was without hesitation that I accepted the offer to come and work with the Acting Department to come and work on a show with their Foundation Year. That the show Girls Like That examines how aspects of the formative school years and educational experience can negatively impact on some, is ironic. Given the extraordinary talents and supportive cohesion of the group I have been working with and the obviously quality and range of teaching they have received from their dedicated staff team. While the show pulls no punches about how cruel and brutal the teenage years can be, the skill, energy, commitment and honesty of the company has been celebratory. Working with the IAB staff team and this amazing group of young artists has, as ever, been an absolute delight and pleasure. This is a special place with its own unique transformative power and it is with great pride that we share some of this with you through these performances.
