The Masters Musical Theatre programme at IAB offers musical theatre performers, actors or dancers the knowledge and power to move on to a new stage in their career through enhanced vocational study of musical theatre buttressed by a strong understanding of performance theory.
The MA Musical Theatre is an immersive and intensive experience, helping you to expand and explore new territories and to define and refine your own personal informed and creative approach to musical theatre performance and creation. The MA aims to nurture talent, and create empowered creative performers and makers.
The aim of the programme is to support and develop a new generation of creative performers and makers who can make a contribution to the development of musical theatre. More specifically the programme aims to develop individuals who can:

Demonstrate, through practice, a rigorous research led understanding of contemporary critical thinking surrounding musical theatre and performance

Teaching and Learning Strategies
The MA Musical Theatre is committed to a student centred approach with a strong emphasis on action research. The majority of the students time will be spent in practical workshop and laboratory sessions exploring the principles and practices of performance technique and performance. Students will explore repertoire from leading practitioners. The programme will include specific and focused lecture programmes exploring the history, theory and context of global theatre production. This will run parallel to a comprehensive programme of lectures and workshops in creative theatre producing.
MODULES AND STRUCTURE
The MA Musical Theatre consists of seven modules and is made up of 90 ECTS units (180 UK credits). The programme starts in September each year.
MUSICAL THEATRE REPERTOIRE AND PERFORMANCE
This practical performance led module is at the centre of the programme and provides the student with the opportunity to bring all the elements of acting, dance/movement and singing together in the exploration of a range of musical theatre texts and genres. The module has a specific focus on the exploration and interrogation of musical theatre forms and helps the student develop a personally distinctive and distinguishable approach to musical theatre performance. (10 ECTS Units)
ACTING FOR MUSICAL THEATRE
This module provides the student with the tools to develop their own personal, informed and practical approach to acting, so as to allow them to create and inhabit believable characters in musical theatre performance (spoken and sung) and to provide the student with a critical and analytical understanding of various accepted concepts and theories associated with acting for musical theatre. (10 ECTS Units)
DANCE AND MOVEMENT FOR MUSICAL THEATRE
The aim of this module is to provide students with practical skills in, and a conceptual understanding of, dance and movement for, musical theatre performance. Recognizing the differing background of individual students, the focus of the module will be on developing critical and practical understanding of the relationship between acting, song and movement and dance in musical theatre performance. (10 ECTS Units)
SINGING FOR MUSICAL THEATRE
This module provides the student with the ability to further develop their vocal performance skills for musical theatre. Students will be supported in developing a greater understanding of the physiology of the voice and its relationship to their body holistically. The module is designed to help the students develop their voice as a creative tool allowing them to develop theatrical character and narrative through vocal performance (Acting through Song) (10 ECTS Units)
PERFORMANCE THEORY AND CONTEXTS
This module provides the students with the ability to contextualise and evaluate their own work and the work of others. Through this module students will critically engage with a range of theoretical and conceptual approaches relevant to contemporary performance practice. The module is also designed to support the student in the development of Master level research and writing skills. (10 ECTS Units)
This module provides students with a clear and practical understanding of theatre producing in a variety of contexts. Creative Theatre Producing is not explored as an abstract concept but as a set of real-world practical skills that will enable the students to take their creative and artistic vision to fruition. (10 ECTS Units)
The Final project is the culmination of the programme. The project allows each student to undertake a substantial and sustained body of practical, creative performance work which capitalizes on their experience, learning and aspirations and intentions as an artist. Each student has the opportunity to negotiate their own plan and strategy for their studies. The Final project is shared between all MA students at the IAB and it is hoped that the project will see collaboration across the MA community.
It is anticipated that the Final Project on the MA Musical Theatre will result in the collaborative production of a range performance projects to be performed at the IAB and potentially internationally. (30 ECTS Units)
WHO IS THE PROGRAMME FOR?
The MA Musical Theatre Programme is designed for mature, adventurous and ambitious musical theatre performers/creators who wish to develop or transition their career. The MA Musical Theatre programme is designed for those with considerable prior experience of acting, singing and musical theatre performance. The experience may come from professional vocational training, undergraduate studies in the performing arts, or professional theatre experience.

Applicants are normally required to have achieved a University degree in an area related to the performing arts. Those who hold unrelated degrees are also encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate substantial levels of performing arts experience as a theatre maker or performer. Applicants without degrees may apply if they are able to demonstrate that they have substantial and directly relevant professional or professional-level work experience (normally three years minimum).
