The Institute of the Arts Barcelona now offers two Foundation Dance programmes, allowing you to choose the training pathway that best suits your interests and artistic ambitions: Foundation Contemporary Dance and Foundation Commercial Dance.
Both programmes provide intensive, full-time training over two terms, helping you develop your technical skills, versatility and artistry in preparation for degree-level dance education.

Our Foundation Dance course is designed to give you intense training over two-terms to develop your skills and artistry in preparation to access degree level education. We will strengthen your skills in a range of different techniques while developing you as a versatile and confident performer.

In addition to the main dance styles, you will get an introduction to acting and ensemble singing lessons. You will take part in Audition and Application classes to prepare you for University auditions, and you will get a chance to perform as a soloist during the end-of-term showcase.

THE PERFECT GAP YEAR IN SPAIN
Some of our students take our Foundation Dance course as an integral part of their gap year, where they get to improve their dancing skills while living in Spain.

1. Submit your application
To apply for our Foundation Dance course, you must submit an application and select which audition you would like to attend.
2. Attend the audtition
For the Foundation Dance audition you will need to choose if you want to follow the Commercial Dance or Contemporary Dance audition path:
We advise you to choose the pathway based on your strengths, previous dance training, and the direction you would most like to pursue.
Option a
Contemporary Dance Audition Path
Required video (Prior to the audition)
You will be asked to submit a contemporary dance solo video.
Live Audition
During the live audition you will take part in:
- Ballet class
- Contemporary section: warm-up, standing exercises based on release technique, a floor work section, a jam sequence and a final phrase with some guided improvisation
- Interview
Please note: Cuts may take place through the audition process, with invited candidates only taking part in the full audition.
Option B
Commercial Dance Audition Path
Required video (Prior to the audition)
You will be asked to submit a commercial dance solo video.
Live Audition
You will take part in the following tutor-led classes:
- Jazz: Technical section, turns and kicks and combination
- Commercial and Freestyle: Hip-Hop combination and guided freestyle
- Interviews
Please note: Cuts may take place through the audition process, with invited candidates only taking part in the full audition.
What will I be asked to submit?
Depending on the pathway you choose:
Contemporary Dance:
You will be sent detailed of specific exercises, which will include:
- Two ballet exercises performed on both sides
- Contemporary dance floorwork exercises
- Contemporary release technique-based exercise
- Improvisation
- Solo
Commercial Dance:
All submissions must include:
- Jazz Exercise
- Jazz Choreography
- Commercial Choreography
- Commercial Freestyle
- Solo
Important note: Once you’ve submitted the application, we will send you more details on the process and links to the set choreography you will need to learn.
3. Wait for the result
The audition results can take up to 4 weeks to process.
Entry criteria
Successful audition, IELTS 5.5 or equivalent, and have studied at least one year of the national university entry academic qualification or equivalent of your country.

Live Audition
During the live audition you will take part in a number of different dance techniques classes:
- Ballet
- Commercial
- Jazz
- Contemporary
One-to-One Interview
You will have a one-to-one meeting with our staff.
Successful audition, IELTS 5.5 or equivalent, and have studied at least one year of the national university entry academic qualification or equivalent of your country.

Our tuition fees are made up of a number of different components and are determined by your nationality, country of residence and programme of study.
