The Contemporary Dance Summer Intensive course at the Institute of the Arts Barcelona is a focused, conservatoire-style training programme designed for performers aged 16–24 with prior experience.
The course features daily classes in contemporary technique, ballet, and choreography to develop organic movement and creative composition. Participants work with expert faculty in an international environment, focusing on refining technical precision and building performance confidence. The programme concludes each week with an informal open class and sharing session for friends and family. Training takes place at our campus based on the seaside town of Sitges, offering a realistic insight into professional dance education.

What classes are included in the Contemporary Dance Summer Intensive?
The Contemporary Dance Intensive focuses on developing technique, creativity, and performance quality within a professional, conservatoire-style environment.
Daily sessions include:
Contemporary Dance
Develop strength, fluidity, and dynamic movement quality through contemporary dance practices, exploring floor work, coordination, and musicality.
Ballet
Build strong foundational technique through barre, centre work, travelling steps, and classical variations.
Choreography
Develop personal movement vocabulary through creative tasks, improvisation, and composition. Selected work will be shared during the Friday open class.
Improvisation
Enhance creativity and personal expression through guided improvisation, exploring movement generation and individual artistic voice.
How to apply?
Do I need to audition to join the Contemporary Dance Summer Intensive?
Depending on which course you are choosing to apply for:
Foundation Dance Course
No formal audition is required.
Contemporary Dance Intermediate Course
No formal audition is required.
Contemporary Dance Elite Course
An audition video is required.
Please submit a 1–2 minute video showing previous performance, rehearsal, or studio work in Contemporary style or technique.
For all videos, please upload as an unlisted YouTube link and include it in your application.
Who is the Contemporary Dance Summer Intensive for?
The Summer Intensive Intermediate/Elite programme is aimed at committed performers with at least three years of consistent training and a strong technical foundation.
The Summer Intensive Foundation programme is aimed at enthusiastic performers with a yearning to learn.
Applicants should outline their training and experience in the application form to ensure correct placement.
– You are under 16 or over 24 at the start of the programme (unless awarded an IAB scholarship).
– You do not meet the minimum experience requirements if unsure please email summer@iabarcelona.es
