Performing Arts Summer Intensive
Summer intensive courses in acting, dance and musical theatre
For students ages 16 to 25, the IAB’s Summer Intensive courses offers technique classes with our professional facility in Acting, Dance and Musical Theatre. All teaching is in English.
These programmes provide a unique and exciting opportunity for students to enhance their skills, experience the amazing facilities at the IAB, meet other young artists and learn from experienced professionals.
The programmes are aimed at motivated students with at least three years of consistent training.
Students are not required to audition as part of the enrolment process, however, as part of the application process will be required to set out their experience and confirm that training of at least three years in order to be eligible.
Dates & time
The Summer Intensive 2024 programme will be repeated over two weeks. Students are welcome to attend for either one or two weeks. The Acting, Dance, and Musical Theatre intensives will begin at 9:30 am, finishing at around 4:30 pm each day.
Week 1- 1 July to 5 July, 2024 (5 days)
Week 2 – 8 July to 12 July, 2024 (5 days)

Fees
The total tuition fees for one week of the Summer Intensive Programme 2024 are €440 per student. This price does not include meals or accommodation.
To secure a place, fees must be paid one-month of the receipt of the application.
Choose between acting, dance or musical theatre
The Acting programme will be taught in English and will be led by current IAB lectures. The daily workshops consisting of Movement for Actors, Voice into Text and Contemporary Scene Study.
Movement for Actors – Acting is a whole-body process. In the movement session, students will engage physically with their imagination and the physical dimensions of roles through effective body language.
Voice into Text – These sessions will explore the technical aspects of voice, including accents, the flow of words and the projection of the text.
Contemporary Scene Study – Using the work of Konstantin Stanislavski and his followers, students will develop an imaginative understanding and interpretation of character and text. These classes will encourage students to explore their own personal approach as actors. The work will be developed through both group and individual games and exercises. A varied selection of material will be chosen to suit each student.
The daily workshops consisting of Contemporary Dance, Jazz Dance, Ballet, Commercial and Choreography led workshops:
Contemporary Dance will explore self-expression through organic, free flowing abstract dance vocabularies. Classes will include centre work, travelling sequences, and movement combination.
Jazz Dance will focus on commercial entertainment and musical theatre styles. Jazz dance aims to challenge dynamic range and increase the subtlety of performance qualities.
Ballet is taught as a foundation skill, emphasising posture, alignment, placement and footwork. Classes will consist of barre work, centre work, traveling steps and classical ballet variations.
Commercial workshops will consist of the creation of a commercial piece including different styles such as street dance, hip hop and other popular styles seen on TV and music videos, channelling high levels of physicality and energy into performance.
Choreography sessions will encourage students to define a personal creative movement vocabulary. This work will be developed through improvisation and creative tasks. Some choreographic work will be shown on the Friday sharing.
The Musical Theatre Summer Intensive explores all three of the principle components of Musical Theatre performance – Acting, Dance and Singing
The daily workshops consisting of Jazz Dance, Ballet and Musical Theatre performance workshops.
- Jazz Dance will focus on commercial entertainment and musical theatre styles. Jazz dance aims to challenge dynamic range and increase the subtlety of performance qualities.
- Ballet is taught as a foundation skill, emphasising posture, alignment, placement and footwork. Classes will consist of barre work, centre work, traveling steps and classical ballet variations.
- Musical Theatre workshops will consist of:
- Singing Technique – participants will explore exercises to develop musicality, breathing, resonance, range, tone, rhythm and harmony. During the sessions, students will perform songs from a variety of genres but principally from musical theatre.
- Acting Through Song – Acting through song will explore the creative and technical skills required for the interpretation of a song from a variety of musical contexts and develop appropriate approaches which capitalise on the dramatic potential of each work and allow the communication of character through song.
- Musical Theatre Repertoire – Musical Theatre requires the triple threat of acting, song and dance. In repertoire students will explore a range of scenes from a variety of genres. Scenes from the repertoire will be performed in the Friday sharing.
Spend a week in Spain doing what you love!
The Summer Intensive programmes will be held at the IAB’s state-of-the art facilities based in the seaside town of Sitges, just 30 minutes south of Barcelona and 15 minutes away from the airport. Sitges is famous for its beautiful old town, many beaches, cultural activities and quality of life.
The IAB is housed in state-of-the-art facilities that includes a 200-seat theatre and world-class dance studios.
Students are required to arrange their own accommodation.
There is a wealth of accommodation locally as Sitges is a popular holiday destination with many hotels and apartments to rent.
Hotels within a short walking distance of the IAB include: Hotel Subur Maritim, Sunway and Hotel Sitges.
Students are welcome to bring their own snacks and lunch. We have an outdoor seating area in our courtyard.
The IAB can also prepare a ready-made packed lunch each day with options available.
The cost is €13/day (€65 per week).
