Susanne Thomas
Head of Dance
🇩🇪, She/Her
Originally from Germany, Susanne moved from Berlin to London to study at the London Contemporary Dance School in the early 90’s and built a career as a choreographer, producer and educator. She holds a portfolio of critically acclaimed works and has extensive leadership experience in both educational and dance industry settings. Susanne led Dance and Choreography at the esteemed Dartington College of Arts and the Urban Practice programme at the University of East London.
As artistic director of Seven Sisters Group, Susanne has forged partnerships with large and small organisations to conceive and realise a wealth of choreographic works, including productions such as “Like A Fish Out of Water” which won the Gold Award for Exceptional Achievement Across All Categories at World Stage Design 2013, a piece created for the Cultural Olympiad London 2012 and commissioned by the English National Ballet with the Mayor of London.
Creative collaboration and nurturing talent have always been at the heart of her artistic direction and teaching, working with a host of international artists and students from dance, theatre, music composition, video, technology and design backgrounds. Her site-specific and immersive dance works have been commissioned by high profile venues, including the London South Bank Centre, Royal Opera House, and the V&A Museum. The concept of morphing live and virtual realities into such contexts has been described as ‘beautiful’, ’inventive’ and ‘groundbreaking’ by critics.
Susanne’s future projects include a commission by Leicester Print Workshop to curate a virtual reality installation, and a new touring work for outdoor festivals employing dance and augmented reality (AR) technology.
