Director of Postgraduate Studies
Andrew McKinnon has wide-ranging experience of making, producing and teaching professional theatre and performance in the UK and internationally. He has directed well over a hundred productions of plays, musicals and operas, managed and led several theatres and arts organisations and been extensively involved in professional theatre training.
Born and raised in Glasgow, Andrew studied at Glasgow University and Balliol College Oxford and then trained as a director in Scotland before becoming an Arts Council Drama Officer in London. Over the next ten years Andrew was Associate Director of Nottingham Playhouse, Artistic Director of York Theatre Royal and Artistic Director of Northern Stage Newcastle.
Andrew then wrote an influential report on the training of directors and worked with the Directors’ Guild before going on to create BAs in Acting for Drama Centre and LAMDA as well as the ground breaking MFA in Theatre Directing for Birkbeck University of London.
After three years as Artistic Director of Perth Theatre Andrew was appointed Head of Postgraduate Theatre at RSAMD (now the National Conservatoire of Scotland) where he created and taught new Acting and Directing Mas, as well as working on many productions at The Arches in Glasgow and several devised projects in the UK, Netherlands, Greece and Egypt.
In 2008 he originated and taught the MA in Creative Producing for Birkbeck University of London. While a Senior Lecturer at Birkbeck he continued to make challenging theatre with award-winning UK Theatre North.
Andrew has a wide range of cultural interests internationally (including music-theatre and contemporary performance). For ten years he participated in the Edinburgh International Festival’s programme, conducting public discussions with distinguished artists including Bogart, Bieito, Breuer, Stein, Purcarete and many others. He has taught and mentored theatre makers, directors and producers in the UK, Europe and USA, worked as a theatre and arts consultant and served on many arts funding panels, committees and boards.
